Safe wading: gear and safety on a cold coast

Madis Teesalu · 5 October 2026 · 2 min read

Sea trout are often fished while wading — knee-deep, thigh-deep, sometimes waist-deep. It's enjoyable and gives you access to places you can't reach from the shore. But cold water, slippery rocks and unexpected drop-offs demand respect.

Waders and boots

  • Breathable waders are more comfortable than rubber ones — especially if you walk several kilometres in a day.
  • Boots with soles that grip the rocks. On slippery, weed-covered rocks, that is the difference between falling and not falling.
  • A wading belt around your waders is a must. If you fall, it stops water rushing into the waders and prevents an air pocket forming that could stop you getting back on your feet.

Dress in layers

Even in summer the water is cool and the wind on the coast is chilly. Dress in layers: a warm base layer, fleece and a windproof jacket. In winter, add gloves, a hat and a spare pair of dry socks in the car.

How to wade

  1. Move slowly. Feel ahead with your foot and plant it firmly before shifting your weight.
  2. Stand side-on to the waves, not facing them.
  3. Don't go deeper than you need to. Up to your hips is plenty. The fish are often closer than you think.
  4. Keep an eye on your way back — a rising wind and waves can make the return harder.
  5. Use a wading staff if you and your balance aren't on “first-name terms” and the bottom is uneven.

Weather and decisions

In dangerous winds, thunderstorms or very big waves, the fishing is called off. That isn't cowardice, it's wisdom. The sea will always be there the next day.

What else to bring

  • a phone in a waterproof bag;
  • a small first-aid kit;
  • a flask with a hot drink;
  • polarised sunglasses — they protect your eyes and help you see the bottom and the fish;
  • a head torch, if you stay until dusk.

Caring for the shore and nature

Estonia's nature is stunningly beautiful, and it is worth protecting. Take your litter home, don't drive onto beaches where it's prohibited, and respect landowners and birds.

On a guided day we always talk about safety before going into the water, and we choose beaches according to the weather. See the guided day details.

Come along!

As the saying goes: roach fishing is primary school, pike fishing is high school, trout fishing is university. Come along and become skilled at catching sea trout — and learn the spots where the fish bite, or how to make them bite. Send me a message about what you have in mind and I will get back to you shortly.
